Pannonhalma Archabbey

Pannonhalma Archabbey

— Surroundings of Pannonhalma

The Archabbey of Pannonhalma and its natural surroundings have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. The monks were settled by Grand Prince Géza in 996, and the monastery was founded by his son,  Stephen, who was the first king of Hungary. The past and the present live harmoniously side by side in the building complex of the world heritage site.

The Romanesque-era basilica, the Gothic cloister, the baroque buildings of the monastery, the classicist library and tower were all built to the highest architectural and technical standards available at that time. One of the special features of the Pannonhalmi Archabbey is that its building is still home to the largest Benedictine community in Hungary, and there is also a continuous boarding high school and a social home within its walls.

During the past ten centuries, the Archabbey achieved its indisputable outstanding role with its cultural, religious and economic activities in the region and its extensive international relations.
