Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto was composed between 1936 and 1939 at the request of one of the composer’s most beloved musical partners, the renowned primarius of the Hungarian String Quartet, Zoltán Székely. Rich in warmly lyrical melodies and masterfully applying the variation form so characteristic of Bartók, the concerto quickly entered the repertoire of the greatest violinists of the time after its premiere in Amsterdam in 1939 and has since become one of the most important and frequently performed works in the violin literature. This performance continues the traditions of the great Hungarian violin school, presented authentically by Barnabás Kelemen.

After the intermission, one of the greatest masterpieces of symphonic literature will be performed: Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4, premiered in 1885, which condenses the centuries-long history of German music into four grand movements. The Győr Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by Andreas Ottensamer, former solo clarinetist of the Berlin Philharmonic and a highly successful conductor.
