Benedictine Exhibition - “400 Years Uncovered”

In May 2026, a new, exciting, interactive exhibition will open in the heart of Győr, within the spaces of the Benedictine monastery and church. Set in a unique historic monument environment, the exhibition guides visitors through the 400-year history of the Czuczor Gergely Benedictine High School.
Have you ever visited the attic of a Baroque church? Do you know the story of the Jesuits who built a church and founded a school in Győr four hundred years ago? How and why did the Benedictines take over the leadership of the school? What was education like over the past centuries? What have the Benedictines given to Győr, and what does it mean to be a Benedictine student today? The exhibition answers these questions while revealing many fascinating and dramatic stories along the way.
The exhibition venue is unique even on a national level. The display is housed in the attic of present-day Hungary’s earliest Baroque church, as well as in the attic wing of the Benedictine monastery overlooking Széchenyi Square. The restored Baroque attic itself already offers visitors a remarkable experience.
It is a rare and breathtaking sight that visitors can walk through a viewing space built above the church vaults while also observing the unique brick structure of the vaulting itself. This perspective offers insight into the hidden world of 17th-century architecture while creating a truly special spatial experience.
Continuing through the attic of the Benedictine monastery, visitors can experience an authentic attic atmosphere. Alongside modern and innovative exhibition solutions, the original Baroque chimneys are still visible today as authentic witnesses to the building’s historic past. The meeting of old and new elements creates a distinctive atmosphere in which the historic architectural environment and the modern exhibition complement each other harmoniously.

The exhibition can only be visited with a guided tour, and the ticket price includes the guided tour fee.
Tickets can be purchased at the Benedictine Shop, which can be accessed through the monastery entrance located to the right of the Benedictine church.
