Mary Column

The group of statues standing on Győr’s imposing baroque main square, Széchenyi Square, was erected by Lipót Kollonich of Győr in 1686 to commemorate the recapture of Buda from the Turks. The name of the creator of the monument, which is located exactly opposite the entrance of the Benedictine Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola, is unknown. At the top of the composition we can see the Virgin Mary, with the Hungarian crown on her head, and the child Jesus on her right. The column is surrounded by statues of saints: the four tall baroque statues model St. Stephen, St. John the Baptist, St. Anthony of Padua and the patron saint of Austria, St. Lipot.
